The Fishing for Litter project in Porto Garibaldi: data from the fourth edition presented at Goletta Verde 2022. Stockings for the cultivation of mussels predominate among the waste brought back to the port by the fishermen.

The round table that was held this morning, Thursday 4 August at the Porto Garibaldi fish market, was an important experience to discuss the opportunities of the new "Salvamare" law, which must see the active participation of all stakeholders of the coast as well as animating a discussion on how to design recovery chains for mussel nets and mitigate their environmental impact.

In fact, once again this year the predominance of stockings for the cultivation of mussels is confirmed among the waste brought back to the port by fishermen, which constitute the 83% of the total of nearly 40,000 units of waste brought to the mainland. Thanks to the action of the fishermen involved in the project, more than 14 tons of material collected it was sent to the correct disposal chain: material that would otherwise have been lost at sea.

The protagonists of the project, the Circolo Legambiente Delta del Po, the fishermen's cooperatives that have taken part in the process over the past 4 years and Clara SPA, had the opportunity to meet and exchange good practices with various territorial and non-territorial realities: among those present Elisa Scocchera, coordinator of the European LIFE Muscles project, active in reducing the impact associated with the use of polypropylene (PP) stockings for mussel farming, between La Spezia and the Gargano; the professor. Michele Mistri of the University of Ferrara, who in recent years has carried out in the Sacca di Goro a project for the collection, classification, differentiated storage on board and on land and analysis of waste from the sea and fishery products; and Giovanni Raggi, vice president of AIPE (Italian Association of Expanded Polystyrene), engaged in the "PORTO A PORTO" operation with the aim of facilitating and improving the recovery of EPS crates for fish in the main ports of the peninsula. The framework that has therefore emerged is that of a common direction in synergy at the national level to set in motion shared practices for the recovery of plastic and derivatives at sea.
