The main objective of the LIFE MUSCLES project is to contribute to the reduction of the impact linked to the use of polypropylene (PP) socks for mussel farming, promoting and creating a more sustainable value chain that minimizes their dispersion in the marine environment, encouraging the recovery and recycling of polymers for the production of new socks and other items.
Contribute to the reduction of the impact linked to the use of polypropylene (PP) socks
Promote the development of new economic relationships between companies in the sector
Perform the characterization of recycled materials in order to ensure their applicability within the mussel farming chain and other production chains or sectors
Raise awareness and inform the main stakeholders (farmers, distributors and consumers) on the greater sustainability of mussel production
Promote the transition towards a circular economic model for the mussel farming sector through the recovery and recycling of polypropylene socks used for mussel farming
Increasing the sustainability of the sector thanks to the replacement of PP socks with those in biodegradable and compostable biopolymer (BP), demonstrating the feasibility of their mechanical and organic recycling
To define and transfer good practices to reduce the dispersion and abandonment of stockings at sea
Providing mussel farmers with a mobile recycling plant capable of operating directly on farms
