Monitoring socks for mussel farming on the beach: the Life MUSCLES video
.
On the occasion of World Water Day, we present an action by Life MUSCLES that allows us to measure the effectiveness of the solutions proposed by our European project.
.
We collect, weigh, catalog and remove the remains for mussel farming from the marine and coastal ecosystem. The data emerging from the beaches of Gargano in Puglia and the Gulf of Poets in Liguria, they will check whether, thanks to the project activities, there will be a decrease in the presence of beached mussel farming socks in the areas of investigation. We apply a monitoring methodology based on Marin Strategy protocol which is applied throughout Europe to evaluate the quantity and type of waste beached and above all allows comparison with other data collection initiatives.
.
We practice that scientific environmentalism which, starting from data and direct observation, allows us to find solutions to address the problem of the dispersion of dispersed polypropylene socks.

The World Water Day it is celebrated every March 22, since its establishment in 1993 by the United Nations and this year is dedicated to the theme of water resources as an instrument of peace. “Recognizing water not only as a resource to be used but as a human right is fundamental to building a peaceful future – declares Giorgio Zampetti, general director of Legambiente –. Water is increasingly at the center of multiple global challenges, including climate change, forced migration and conflict. The climate crisis and its unsustainable management is a problem which, although it has serious repercussions in already vulnerable areas of the world, concerns all countries, including Italy".
